No Olympics for Bonnie

Bonnie declined Great Britain Basketball's invitation to join their Olympic training camp because her broken finger is not fully healed and she's not supposed to use it for several weeks.

Cardinal in the 2012 Olympics?

... well, maybe.

Candice Wiggins ('08) and Jayne Appel ('10) are members of the 2009-12 USA Basketball Senior National Team, but neither was named to the U.S. Women’s Olympic Team.

However, three other Cardinal have a chance of playing in the 2012 Olympics.

Bonnie has a chance of getting on a team that has already qualified for the Olympics — the host nation, Great Britain.

Bonnie was invited to join Britain's preliminary squad of 20 players who will begin training in Surrey, England on May 5. The preliminary squad will be cut down to 18 next month. By the end of the training camp period the squad will have been reduced to 16 players before the final 12 are selected for the final team on the June 22.

Bonnie is eligible for the British team due to her mother being born in Great Britain and formerly playing for the All-England Netball Team.

Jillian Harmon ('09) and Kristen Newlin ('07) are members of national teams (New Zealand and Turkey) that have a chance to qualify for a place in the Olympics.

New Zealand and Turkey will compete in the Olympics Qualifying Tournament (OQT) , which will take place from June 25 to July 1 in Ankara, Turkey. Twelve teams will compete for five places in the Olympics. The twelve competitors have been placed into four groups of three teams each. After the teams in each group play each other, the top two in each group advance to the quarterfinals. The winners of the quarterfinals qualify for the Olympics. The losers of the quarterfinals will continue play for the final available spot.

Kristen has been a member of the Turkish national team since 2008. The Turkish national team earned a place in the OQT with a second-place finish in 2011 FIBA EuroBasket, where they lost to Russia in the championship game. It was the first time the Turkish team had advanced beyond the final eight in the EuroBasket tournament.

Jillian has been a member of the Tall Ferns (the New Zealand senior women's basketball team) since 2008 when they competed in the 2008 Olympics. The Tall Ferns earned a place in the OQT this year as the runner-up (to Australia) in the 2011 FIBA Oceania Championship.
